چکیده

brain disease that occurs in around 10% of the elderly and, as yet, there is no known cure. The most effective treatments are medications that attempt to increase the brain’s levels of acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter whose levels decrease with onset of disease. These drugs work by interfering with acetylcholine esterase (AChE), an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine (Fig. 1). Research by two scientists at the Weizmann Institute in Israel (http://www.weizmann.ac.il), has found that Rivastigmine (an AChE inhibitor) might be much more effective at raising acetylcholine levels than was previously thought [1]. Joel Sussman (Pickman Professor of Structural Biology) and Israel Silman (Bernstein-Mason Professor of Neurobiology) found that the drug has increased activity levels, lasting much longer than was suspected. X-ray crystals of the drug binding to AChE show a unique structure, which probably explains this lasting effect.

Factors associated with use of medications with potential to impair cognition or cholinesterase inhibitors among Alzheimer's disease patients.

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to use a signal detection method to examine the prevalence of, and patient characteristics associated with, medication with potential to impair cognition and cholinesterase inhibitor use in patients with Alzheimer's disease. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted of 1,954 patients with a diagnosis of probable or possible Alzheimer's disease. Concurr...

Memory Awareness Influences Everyday Decision Making Capacity about Medication Management in Alzheimer's Disease

Memory awareness in early Alzheimer's disease (AD) influences capacity to provide informed consent for a memory treatment. This study investigated the extent to which aspects of memory awareness influence everyday decision-making capacity about medication management in AD. 42 participants with mild AD and 50 healthy elders underwent clinical ratings of memory awareness, metamemory testing, and ...

Disclosure of Alzheimer's disease. Senior citizens' opinions.

OBJECTIVE To determine the proportion of elderly people without dementia who would want disclosure of a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), for themselves or for their spouses, and to verify whether the availability of medication would influence their decision. DESIGN A cross-sectional survey with a semistructured questionnaire completed during face-to-face interviews. SETTING Medical an...

Genome-wide association study of the rate of cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND Substantial interindividual variability exists in the disease trajectories of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. Some decline rapidly whereas others decline slowly, and there are no known explanations for this variability. We describe the first genome-wide association study to examine rate of cognitive decline in a sample of AD patients with longitudinal measures of cognition. METH...

[The Epidemiology of Dementia and Alzheimer Disease in Portugal: Estimations of Prevalence and Treatment-Costs].

INTRODUCTION The incidence and prevalence of global dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD) increase with age, almost doubling every five years after the sixth decade of life. Demographic aging is a reality in Portugal, being expectable that the number of dementia cases also increases. Even so, dementia-epidemiological data in Portugal is scarce and cost-of-illness studies are almost inexistent. ...
